History
Newark Broad Street opened on 19 November 1836 as the eastern terminal of the opening segment of the Morris and Essex Railroad to Orange. A number of western expansions were built but only in 1907 was Hoboken Terminal, the current eastern end of the line, opened. Eastern service before this was provided by the New Jersey Rail Road. The Morris and Essex Railroad was eventually bought out by the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad in 1945 and merged with the Erie Railroad to form with the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. Sixteen years later, the railroad was absorbed by Conrail and only three years after that, New Jersey Transit was formed and began its operating all services at the station, a service that still continues to this day.
