Steve Brodie

Columbia Encyclopedia: Steve Brodie
Brodie, Steve, 1863-1901, Brooklyn bookmaker who gained immediate fame and a measure of immortality by allegedly jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge and surviving the fall, on July 23, 1886. It was claimed that Brodie had not, in fact, jumped from the bridge but that a dummy was used as he hid under a pier. In any case he gained the publicity he was seeking, and a tavern he opened shortly after in the Bowery became a mecca for sightseers.

Biography

When casting about for a non de film, upon embarking on a movie career in 1944, Kansas-born stage actor John Stevenson chose the name of the fellow who allegedly jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge in the 1880s. As "Steve Brodie," Stevenson spent the 1940s working at MGM, RKO and Republic. He flourished in two-fisted "outdoors" roles throughout the 1950s, mostly in westerns. He holds the distinction of being beaten up twice by Elvis Presley, in Blue Hawaii (1961) and Roustabout (1964). Steve Brodie's screen career was pretty much limited to cheap exploitation flicks in the 1970s, though he did function as co-producer of the "B"-plus actioner Bobby Jo and the Outlaw (1976), a film distinguished by its steady stream of movie-buff "in" jokes. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Steve Brodie (November 21, 1919 – January 9, 1992) was an American movie and television actor, born John Stevenson in El Dorado, Kansas.

He chose his screen name after Steve Brodie (1863-1901) who allegedly jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge in 1886. Brodie survived the jump and "taking a Brodie" entered the lexicon for bridge jumpers.

Most of his film work was from the mid 1940s to the early 1950s working at MGM, RKO and Republic Pictures appearing mostly in westerns and B-movies. He mainly played supporting roles in films such as the film noir classic Out of the Past (1947) and the classic crime film Armored Car Robbery (1950), although he did have the starring role in Desperate (1947). He later appeared with Elvis Presley in Blue Hawaii (1961) and Roustabout (1964). Starting from the mid 1950s he mostly appeared on television, including three episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents and in the episode "Vendetta" of the syndicated western series Pony Express. He and Sterling Holloway appeared in the 1960 episode "Love Me, Love My Dog" of the syndicated crime drama The Brothers Brannagan.

He was married to actress Lois Andrews from 1946 to her death in 1968.

He died of cancer in West Hills, California.
