Biography

As the daughter of professional wrestler Hulk Hogan, pop singer Brooke Hogan was raised by a family accustomed to the type of lifestyle that comes with fame, which helped her easily transition into the celebrity spotlight of her own making as a teenager. Born and raised in Tampa, FL, she entered the world on May 5, 1988, as Brooke Bollea, the oldest of two children. She would later adopt her father's stage surname of Hogan. Growing up in a home filled with the music of the Isley Brothers, Earth, Wind & Fire, Whitney Houston, and Toni Braxton, she caught the entertainment bug early, starting piano lessons when she was five. Brooke soon added cheerleading, dance, and voice lessons to her résumé, and at the age ten, she decided she was ready (with the help of her parents) to start calling talent agencies. This led to a modeling contract, and by 15, Brooke had further developed her musical skills enough to land opening slots on tours for Hilary Duff and the Backstreet Boys, as well as singing gigs at a Radio Disney holiday event.

She recorded her first charting single, "Everything to Me," in 2004, the same year that the Hogan family was spotlighted on a VH1 television special. The hour-long show did so well that it blossomed into a reality series, Hogan Knows Best. Brooke's road to becoming a pop star (not to mention an actively dating teen overcoming an overprotective father) was concurrently documented alongside the Hogan family's daily life. Soon enough, producer Scott Storch (Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, 50 Cent) approached her about recording a song of his, an opportunity that led to Brooke being the first artist signed to his label, Storch Music Company (created through a deal with SoBe Entertainment). Four months of work in Miami resulted in Brooke's debut dance-pop album, Undiscovered, which included collaborations with Nelly Furtado, Beenie Man, and Cam'ron. The record's first single, "About Us," featured rapper Paul Wall and heated up airwaves upon its release in summer 2006, coinciding with the filming of the third season of Hogan Knows Best. The resulting hype helped pave the way for Undiscovered's arrival in late October.

By mid-2008, Brooke's family had spectacularly disintegrated on TV, leading to the cancellation of Hogan Knows Best and the divorce of her parents. Having just turned 20 years old, Brooke parlayed her new independence into another reality TV series, Brooke Knows Best, which launched that summer. The show documented her life as a young, single, autonomous woman; moreover, it served as a means of stopgap entertainment while Brooke readied her second album, The Redemption. After issuing a "mixtape," Judgement Day, as a free digital download, she returned her attention to The Redemption, which arrived in July 2009 and included cameos by Colby O'Donis and Flo Rida. ~ Corey Apar, All Music Guide

Early life

Brooke was born in Tampa, Florida, the oldest child of professional wrestler Hulk Hogan (Terrence Gene "Terry" Bollea) and Linda Bollea, and the older sister of Nick Bollea.

In high school, she took dance classes, voice lessons, and gymnastics. She joined the cheerleading squad of her Clearwater, FL school, Clearwater Central Catholic, in her freshman year. Hogan graduated from high school at the age of sixteen.[2]

Career

Music

Hogan was signed to Trans Continental Records in 2002.[3] Some early music was produced with the help of Rich Cronin.[4] Her first song in the United States singles charts was "Everything to Me". Produced and written by Shep Goodman and Kenny Gioia as part of her album This Voice, the single was released in July 2004. It appeared at #97 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales,[5] but dropped off the chart in a few weeks. The album was planned for release September 21, 2004,[6] but this never happened. Hogan opened for Hilary Duff in support of her unreleased debut. She sang the national anthem before the last game of the 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs on June 7, 2004. During this time manager Larry Rudolph helped her rise to fame as well as work on her debut album.

In 2006, Hogan changed record labels and became the first artist signed to Scott Storch's label, initially called Storchaveli Records,[7][8] but later named Storch Music Company. She also signed with SoBe Entertainment. Hogan's first single, "About Us", premiered on the season two finale of Hogan Knows Best. The album, Undiscovered, was released October 24, 2006. The album debuted at #28 on the Billboard 200, selling 30,000 copies in its first week.[9] The album went on to sell 127,000 copies. In 2006 Hogan won a Teen Choice Award for Best Choice Grill for the music video for "About Us".

In December 2006, Hogan began working on new material but stated that she was only doing this for fun. Then in January 2007, her label decided that they would re-release her debut album the next month. Hogan decided not to and opted to record her second album. By August 2007, Hogan confirmed that she would be departing from one of her labels, SMC, and soon confirmed that she had signed a dual contract with SoBe Entertainment and Fontana Records and was at work on her second album. The album was released in June 2009. Hogan stated that the second season of Brooke Knows Best would premiere around the same time of the album's release.

On March 31, 2009, she released the lead single from her second album, "Falling", featuring Stacks. She revealed during a visit to Power 96 in March that the name of her second album would be The Redemption. Hogan later stated the album was due for a June 30, 2009 release, and that the second single would be released on June 9 and would be "Hey Yo!". The second single was later released on June 30, 2009 instead and the album was announced for a July 21, 2009 release. The album was released to mixed reviews and sold 3,381 copies in its first week, debuting at #144 on the Billboard 200.

She was released from her four year contract with SoBe Entertainment a year early after the promotion for the album concluded. She is now only signed to Fontana Records. To date, she is the only artist signed to the label.

Acting

Hogan appeared with her father in an hour-long profile on VH1, (Inside) Out: Hulk Hogan, Stage Dad. The success of this special spawned an entire series. Hogan Knows Best debuted in July 2005 and was the highest-rated series premiere in VH1's network history. The series, which helped her become a household name,[10] was according to Hulk Hogan intended in part to promote Brooke's music career.[2]

Hogan Knows Best presented her father as strict with her dating. On the show, Hulk placed a GPS tracker on Brooke's vehicle that enables him to track her whereabouts and can even remotely shut down the engine of his daughter's car if he feels the need to do so. However, Brooke said in a later interview that her father loosened up after her eighteenth birthday.[11]

Hogan appeared as a panel judge in America's Prom Queen in early 2008. A spin-off series of Hogan Knows Best called Brooke Knows Best premiered on July 13, 2008 on VH1.[12] The series has consisted so far of two seasons with a third yet to be confirmed.

Hogan will be making her film debuts in two films in 2009 including the Indie Horror film Devour alongside Kelly Osbourne and in the animated film Little Hercules in Disney Digital 3-D.

Modeling

Hogan appeared in the November 2006 edition of FHM,[13] becoming the first FHM Cover Model under 21-years-old. As a result, the November issue had no liquor advertising: "In the very rare instance that you might have a cover star under the age of 21, they don't want to be in the position of seeming to market to anyone under age."[14]
