Brookhaven National Laboratory is one of the leading government research centers in the US, with about 3,000 scientists and staff and more than 4,000 visiting researchers investigating such areas as the environment, high-energy physics, materials science, and nuclear energy. The lab has produced work leading to new medical techniques and is home to one of the world's largest particle accelerators; in addition, past work has garnered 6 of the prestigious Nobel Prizes. Established in 1947, Brookhaven Lab is funded by the US Department of Energy and operated by Brookhaven Science Associates, a joint venture between Battelle Memorial Institute and Stony Brook University.
