Biography
Comedian Theodore Gottlieb rose to prominence with his humorous guest spots on TV talk shows with Merv Griffin and Steve Allen, but he's best-known for his regular appearances on the David Letterman show during the '80s. A German native who was a prisoner of a Dachau concentration camp before arriving in the United States, Gottlieb initially worked as a janitor at Stanford University and a dockworker in San Francisco. Shortly after relocating to Hollywood, Gottlieb landed a small part in Orson Welles' 1946 film The Stranger. After moving to New York City, he performed in shows in Greenwich Village clubs, developing a dark one-man show as the character Brother Theodore. Gottlieb died on April 5, 2001, at a hospital in New York at the age of 94. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi
