John Moses Browning
Browning, John Moses (1855-1926) American inventor, born in Ogden, Utah. Browning was the leading American designer of automatic arms in the early 20th century. Browning patented a breech-loading single-shot rifle (1879) and a gas-operated Colt machine gun (1895), and designed firearms for Colt, Winchester, Stevens, and Remington gunmakers. He was the inventor of the Browning automatic pistol (1911; standard issue until the 1980s), the Browning machine gun (1917), and the automatic rifle, or BAR (1918).
