Dictionary of Dance: Deborah Bull

Bull, Deborah (b Derby, 22 Mar. 1963). British dancer and writer. She trained at the Royal Ballet School and won the 1980 Prix de Lausanne. She joined the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden in 1981, promoted to principal in 1992. She danced many of the leading roles in the classical repertoire and was noted for her performances in ballets by MacMillan and Forsythe. She has created roles for Page, Bintley, Tetley, and Tharp. In 1996 she debated at the Oxford Union; in 1998 she published two books, Dancing Away and The Vitality Plan. Appointed to the Arts Council of England (1998). She retired from the Royal in 2001.

Bull, Olaf (ō'läf būl), 1883-1933, Norwegian lyric poet. The son of a successful writer, Bull began his career as a journalist. His poetic brilliance was revealed by the publication of his collection Digte [poems] (1909). He is noted for a style characterized by flawlessness of form and the use of daring imagery.
