Hoover, Grand Coulee, and more than 600 other dams would not exist without the Bureau of Reclamation. The agency was established in 1902 to construct dams, power plants, and canals throughout 17 western US states. The Bureau of Reclamation is the largest distributor of water in the country, serving more than 31 million people and providing irrigation water for about 10 million acres of farmland. It is also a leading producer of hydroelectric power, with 58 power plants that serve 3.5 million households. The agency coordinates water distribution and conservation services with state governments and Native American tribes. The agency has a $2 billion annual budget.
