Burleson is a city spanning Johnson and Tarrant Counties in the U.S. state of Texas. It is considered a suburb of Fort Worth and is located in the rapidly growing suburban expanse just south of the city. As of 2009, the population was 34,350[3], having increased from the 20,976 residents officially counted during the 2000 census. Burleson is named for Rufus C. Burleson, a former President of Baylor University at Waco.[4]

On October 10—11, 2009, the First Baptist Church observed its 125th anniversary during Burleson's Founders Day weekend. An historical marker, the fourth in Burleson, was unveiled at the church.[5]

An historical marker is also pending outside Burleson at the location of a stagecoach robbery by the notorious frontier outlaw Sam Bass.[5]

Burleson is the home of The Quebe Sisters Band, a trio of young fiddle players.

Geography

Burleson is located at 32°32′9″N 97°19′38″W / 32.53583°N 97.32722°W / 32.53583; -97.32722 (32.535939, -97.327257).[6]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.7 square miles (51.0 km²), of which, 19.6 square miles (50.9 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (0.30%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 20,976 people, 7,610 households, and 5,981 families residing in the city. The population density was 412.2/km² (1,067.7/mi²). There were 7,794 housing units at an average density of 153.1/km² (396.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.62% White, 0.40% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.46% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.41% of the population.

There were 7,610 households of which 41.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.0% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.4% are classified as non-families according to the United States Census Bureau. Of 7,610 households, 287 are unmarried partner households: 261 heterosexual, 0 same-sex male, and 26 same-sex female households.

18.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.11.

The age distribution of the city is 29.1% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $50,432, and the median income for a family was $56,031. Males had a median income of $40,567 versus $27,032 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,175. About 4.9% of families and 6.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.5% of those under age 18 and 9.6% of those age 65 or over.
