Review

With its huge sound (produced by former Santana drummer Michael Shrieve), electric cello solos, and two lead vocalists (Charlie Murphy and Jami Sieber), this album was produced to be an international contender. Murphy's voice and poetic approach to lyric writing call to mind Canadian rocker Bruce Cockburn. The tracks build to a crescendo of instrumentation to rival U2 at their most passionate. And the pure heart and aplomb with which the group deals with social issues rivals Midnight Oil, whom this group has opened for on tour. The strongest cut is "I Choose Life," a song about "keep(ing) the angel of death at bay in the middle of a silent war." The final affirmative chorus of that song is followed by a group of voices singing "We will remember, we will remember their names." A strong album of political pop, Burning Times has a vibrant power that matches the music to the message, such as on the reggae rocker "The Only Green World." Signed for a five-album deal to Earth Beat/Warner Brothers Records, the world will definitely be hearing more from Rumours of the Big Wave in the years ahead. ~ Will Grega, All Music Guide
