Review

Although the Buster Poindexter shtick isn't nearly as fresh or entertaining in 1997 as it was in 1987, the Latin-tinged Buster's Spanish Rocketship is a minor triumph, demonstrating that David Johansen has an ear for material and a self-deprecating sense of humor that keeps Poindexter enjoyable. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Buster's Spanish Rocketship is the fourth album from Buster Poindexter, the alter ego singer David Johansen.

Like his previous two albums Buster Goes Berserk and Buster's Happy Hour, it features his backing band The Banshees of Blue, and also continued the "lounge rock" style of its predecessors in covering rhythm 'n' blues songs of the 1940s and 1950s. "Mean Spirited Sal" was the most popular track.

For the album, the Banshees of Blue consisted of: Soozie Tyrell (vocals); Richard Barone (vocals); Brian Koonin (guitar, cuatro); Jack Bashkow (saxophone, piccolo); Kenny Fradley (trumpet); Byron Stripling (trumpet; Mark Pender (trumpet); Conrad Herwig (trombone); Jimmy Bosch (trombone); Randy Andos (bass trombone); Charley Giordano (accordion, piano); Andy Gonzales (bass); Brian Hamm (bass); Tony Machine (drums); Fred Walcott (percussion); Ismael "Bongo" Bruno (percussion); and Mike Jacobson (percussion).
