Biography

With her memorable performance as tough but sympathetic rebel teen Kim Kelly in the critically praised but criminally short-lived series Freaks and Geeks, actress Busy Philipps crafted one of the most compelling young characters in contemporary television. In addition to later serving as something of a life-support system for the rapidly expiring teen drama Dawson's Creek, Philipps has gone on to make a name for herself in such features as the Columbine-influenced Home Room and the 2004 comedy White Chicks as well. Born Elizabeth Jean Philipps in Oak Park, IL, the active youngster was quickly dubbed "Busy" for her seemingly boundless energy and sociability. A role as Wilber the Pig in a grade-school production of Charlotte's Web eventually lead to Philipps being voted Best Actress of her class in her senior yearbook. The ambitious screen prospect went on to take classes at the Acting Lab of Arizona, where she would write and produce a pair of successful plays. Philipps subsequently refined her skills by studying at England's Oxford School of Drama before making a name for herself in community theater around the Scottsdale area, with her first professional gig coming with a role as a real-life Barbie doll at Mattel's Toy Fair convention in New York. Philipps role in Freaks and Geeks did wonders for her exposure, regardless of the endearing show's remarkably short lifespan, and in the years that followed, she continued to impress in such features as Anatomy of a Hate Crime and Home Room. Many viewed Philipps' involvement with Dawson's Creek as something of a breath of fresh air for the somewhat stale series, with simultaneous appearances in the Freaks and Geeks follow-up series Undeclared proving a welcome opportunity to work with old friends. In 2004, Philipps took a supporting role opposite Jaime King in the Shawn and Marlon Wayans comedy White Chicks. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Biography

Career

Philipps worked the toy-fair circuit as a real-life Barbie before making her show-business debut. Her first major role was as the part of Kim Kelly in Freaks and Geeks, in which she appeared in all 18 episodes. She later made her film debut in comedy The Smokers in 2000, as well as various other cameos on television.

In 2001, Philipps was cast as Audrey Liddell in the teen drama Dawson's Creek. She was a series regular in seasons 5 and 6, appearing in 46 episodes, before the show finished in 2003. Her role of Audrey earned Philipps a Teen Choice Awards nomination in the category of "TV - Choice Sidekick".[2] She was later ranked #58 on the Maxim Hot 100 Women of 2001.[3]

Philipps later appeared in two films, Home Room (2002) and White Chicks (2004). She was cast in the UPN sitcom Love, Inc., in a role originally intended for Shannen Doherty. The show lasted for one season (2005-2006) before being cancelled. In 2006, she had a major recurring role as Hope Bobeck on ER. During her second year on ER, her character headed to South America to "fulfill her Christian mission".[4]

Philipps had a co-credit for the storyline of the 2007 comedy film Blades of Glory.[5] A year later, Philipps returned to being in front of the camera with her supporting role in Made Of Honor.

While pregnant with her first child, Philipps taped scenes for The Sarah Connor Chronicles.[6] Phillips also made a brief appearance in He's Just Not That Into You as the character of Kelli Ann.

Personal life

Philipps was born in Oak Park, Illinois. Her parents gave her the nickname Busy because, as an infant, she was always moving, and the nickname stuck; it even appears on her driver's license. She attended Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Arizona. She attended Loyola Marymount University at the same time as former boyfriend, Colin Hanks, and Linda Cardellini (her Freaks and Geeks and ER co-star). She married Marc Silverstein in 2007. She is an avid Tori Amos fan. Philipps is the godmother of actor Heath Ledger and actress Michelle Williams' daughter Matilda Rose Ledger; actor Jake Gyllenhaal is the godfather. According to People.com, Busy Philipps and her screenwriter husband, Marc Silverstein, have welcomed a baby girl, Birdie Leigh Silverstein, on Wednesday, August 13, 2008. Actress Lizzy Caplan is the godmother of Birdie.
