Biography

The Butterflies (spelled "Butterflys" in some sources) were a group signed to (or, more properly, released by) the Red Bird label, and were featured on the label's ninth release with a version of the Jeff Barry/Ellie Greenwich song "Goodnight Baby." Apart from Greenwich singing backup, there's no indication of who was actually on the record with her. The Butterflies' next record was a version of "I Wonder," which was very clearly Greenwich overdubbed multiple times; she was already serving as the voice (or voices) of the Raindrops, so why not try another guise? That single somehow never got any higher on the charts than number 117, and the name was retired after that, as Greenwich and Barry had more important matters to attend to and Red Bird wanted to cultivate a tougher girl group sound. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
