Buttermere is a tiny village and civil parish at the eastern edge of the English county of Wiltshire. It stands above the steep escarpment of Ham Hill, and at 250 metres above sea level it is the highest village in Wiltshire and probably the highest in Wessex.

Local government
Buttermere is a civil parish governed by a parish meeting, a form of governance only adopted for very small parishes. It also falls within the area of the Wiltshire Council unitary authority, which is responsible for all significant local government functions.
In the 2002 census, the parish had a population of 38.
