Planning Your Trip: Getting Around: In the City: By Taxi

<< By Tram || By Car >>

Taxis can be found at airports, train stations, near major tourist sites and on taxi ranks at large intersections. You can also signal for one to stop if you see it passing by (they’re easily identifiable by an illuminated sign on the roof). It’s almost impossible to find a free taxi on Friday or Saturday night right after the métro closes, so you may have to call for one (some restaurants and bars will call for you).

Taxis within Paris during the day are relatively inexpensive (usually €8-€15). If you call a taxi to pick you up, the meter will already be running (all taxis have meters). The minimum fare is €5. Prices are higher at night, (7pm to 7am), in the suburbs, on Sundays and holidays, and if you have luggage (€0.90/each) or a fourth passenger (€2.60). Most taxis only accept cash, so ask in advance if you want to pay by credit card. If you want to tip, it’s customary to round up by a euro or two for a short trip.

It helps to have the address written down for the driver, since pronunciation problems can cause confusion. If you need cash, ask the driver to stop at an ATM (distributeur d’argent) and wait for you. Always ask for a receipt (un réçu) in case you leave something in the taxi or want to file a complaint.
