Spain (Extremadura): possibly founded in 74 bc by, and named after, the Roman consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius (d. c.63 bc), the present name being derived from Caecilius. The name was given an Arabic flavour by the Moors during their occupation from the 9th century until 1229 when the town was recaptured by Alfonso IX (1171–1230), King of León (1188–1230).
