Caccia

(It. : ‘hunt’, ‘chase’; pl. cacce)

A poetic and musical genre cultivated in Italy in the 14th and early 15th centuries. The texts describe hunting scenes, occasionally of an allegorical nature (e.g. love pursuits). The music usually consists of a texted canon for the upper voices, reflecting the hunting theme, accompanied (unlike the French Chace) by an independent tenor. Some, through their textual or musical structure, show a relationship with the trecento madrigal.
