Welsh: from an Old Welsh personal name, Cadell, formed with Welsh cad ‘battle’. It was popular in the Middle Ages as a result of the fame of Cadell ab Urien, a 7th-century saint who founded the chapel of Llangadell (‘church of Cadell’) in Glamorgan. The surname is also found in Scotland and Ireland; in Scotland it is a variant of Calder.
