Café del Mar flag

Café del Mar (freely translated as "cafe by the sea") is a world famous bar located in Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza. Known for its spectacular sunsets and chill-out music, it is a popular tourist destination during the summer season. Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of tourists and locals gather in front of the café to enjoy relaxing chill-out music, while the sun slowly disappears under the horizon. Café del Mar has played a major role in the foundation of chill-out music culture[1].

While the Café del Mar located in Sant Antoni de Portmany is by far the most famous one, Café del Mar has franchises in various locations around the world, including bars, accommodations, and shops.

History

Beginning

The Café del Mar was founded by Ramón Guiral, Carlos Andrea, and José Les on 20 June 1980. [2]. "Our aim was to create a special atmosphere, unique and unbelievable experience, a dream where perfect fusion of music and wonderful sights will take us to an unknown place." Therefore, Café del Mar was born to put music to the sunsets. [3]

30th anniversary

Café del Mar will be celebrating their 30th anniversary on 20 June 2010.

Decoration

The unique look of the Café del Mar was designed by a well-known Catalan architect, Lluis Güell. He was in charge of the design, decoration and architecture. The decoration is deeply inspired by the Mediterranean Sea. Most CDs by Café del Mar contains decorative elements of the Café in the cover artwork.[4].

Music

The Café del Mar is perhaps most known around the world for its chill-out music compilations. The tracklist is carefully chosen to reflect the mood and spirit of a sunset by the ocean. The songs are described as balearic ambient, easy listening music. The collections of the music played at the café were first sold on cassette at the end of the 1980s. In 1994, the first official “Café del Mar” CD was released, which included works by world-renowned artists. Following the great success of the first release, a total of 16 volumes of the main compilation series have been published, continuing to this date. Today, Café del Mar stands as the most respected and highly imitated chill-out music compilation series, selling millions of copies around the world[5].

The artists

Café del Mar compilations contain music by artists all over the world, more famous ones including A.R. Rahman, Moby, Jean-Michel Jarre, Chicane, Underworld, and Thomas Newman. Café del Mar has also released artist albums by Rue du Soleil and Gary B.

Lifestyle

At the end of 2003, the company Café del Mar set up its franchise department under Ibiza music & clothes with the idea of expanding the name worldwide. In line with the group’s philosophy, franchises are granted jointly as a bar and shop. The shops are selling everything from clothing, cosmetics, CDs to even cellphones. [1]
