Part of the fulfillment operation that receives, opens, and sorts mail and prepares bank deposits from all monies received. The name is derived from old-time fulfillment operations that were enclosed by metal fences or gates for security. This level of security was necessary when cash, rather than checks or money orders, was frequently sent through the mail. See also cashier.
