Cast-iron rollers sometimes used in papermaking. To make the surface of the paper smooth, paper is pressed between the calender rollers of a papermaking machine prior to being wound on reels. Most papers other than antique finished papers are calendered. The degree of smoothness achieved is controlled by the amount of pressure applied to the rollers. Calendering produces an eggshell finish, vellum finish, or english finish. See also finish; supercalender.
