  • Release Year: 1970

Plot

Named after Apollinaire's modernist masterpiece, which introduced new forms into poetic thought, Woody and Steina Vasulka's Calligrams accomplishes a similar task for video art. On the screen, a web of video stalactites advance from left to right as they slowly decay into snow. After decaying they grow into a new, but similar, form as the process reiterates itself for the duration of the tape. Caligrams was made by directly manipulating the video image after recording it off a video monitor and is representative as a part of a general project by the Vasulkas to define a vocabulary of video images and forms. ~ Brian Whitener, All Movie Guide
