The Cambodia national football team is the national team of Cambodia and is controlled by the Cambodian Football Federation. It was known as the Khmer Republic national football team from 1970 to 1975. It finished fourth in the 1972 Asian Cup, but is currently one of the weakest teams in the world and did not even attempt qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. The team was founded in 1933 and joined FIFA's ranks in 1953. One of Cambodia's best players was Hok "Jet" Sochetra. Earlier in the decade he was considered one of the top 2 strikers in South East Asia along with Kiatisuk Senamuang from Thailand[1] In 1997, Hok Sochetra won the best player award in Southeast Asia in 1997 - the Golden Ball from Sanyo. [2] He has scored 42 goals in 64 international matches. [3]

Recent developments

In October 2007, Cambodia was eliminated from the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, at the first hurdle, losing 1-0 to Turkmenistan at home in Phnom Penh and 4-1 away in Ashgabat.

On 21 December 2007 it was announced that Yoo Kee-Heung, a South Korean coach, had been hired as the Cambodia national team coach. This appointment was reported to be part of a sponsorship deal with a Korean technology company worth $205 000 a year, half of which will be Yoo's salary.[4]

On July, 2008 the Cambodian Football Federation fired South Korean coach Yoo Kee-Heung from the national team after poor results and the lack of a coaching license and he has been replaced by local coach Prak Sovannara.[5]

Places for improvement

There is good physical conditioning of the young players but they lack football IQ. Former Cambodian football star, Hok Socheatra said "They can pass, they can shoot, but they don't know how to [lose] the defender to create space to have a chance at goal. They don't know how to [outsmart] the goalkeeper." [6]
