Camp Courageous is a year-round therapedic camp located in Monticello for Iowa-area people of all ages with various disabilities.
Camp Courageous of Iowa is a year-round recreational and respite care facility for individuals of all ages with disabilities. It servers campers from age 1 to 105 from the the midwestern United States and beyond. The camp was established by a group of parents that saw a need for a camp based on the philosophy that "we are more alike than we are different."
The camping retreat was established in 1972 after 40 acres of land was donated for the sole purpose of establishing a camp for the disabled and much of the buildings that were built were from donated labor and materials. Two years later, the camp was opened and the first 211 campers arrived. To this day, the camp is open year-round with various activities such as archery, arts & crafts, canoeing, fishing, hiking, and other sporting activities.
Camp Courageous is located about five miles southwest of Monticello, Iowa. The camp occupies about 80 acres of land adjacent to the Pictured Rocks state park in Jones County, Iowa.
