Biography

From their 2002 inception, Camp Freddy were neither a full-time band nor a jam session, falling somewhere in that middle ground where friends simply came occasionally together to play music (namely cover songs) for the sheer fun of playing rock & roll. Deriving their name from a character in the Michael Caine movie The Italian Job, the band was primarily comprised of guitarist/vocalist Billy Morrison, guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Matt Sorum, vocalist Scott Weiland, vocalist Donovan Leitch, and bassist Chris Chaney; they created a pretty impressive musical résumé among them, time having been spent with groups like the Cult, Guns N' Roses, Stone Temple Pilots, Jane's Addiction, Velvet Revolver, Nancy Boy, Circus Diablo, and the Panic Channel.

And though the aforementioned were the core of Camp Freddy's spirit, the band's performances played host to a wide variety of special guests, inviting more notable musicians to perform with them over time than one could try to remember. The guys played a diversity of gigs over the years, from parties for Blender magazine and Grey Goose Vodka and opening the world's largest strip club to participating in charity events and doing secret hometown gigs around Los Angeles; Camp Freddy also host a weekly radio show on L.A.'s Indie 103.1 FM. The band's first recorded output appeared in late 2006 when Camp Freddy donated two tracks to the movie soundtrack for the comedy Employee of the Month, including their first single, a cover of the Cheap Trick classic "Surrender." ~ Corey Apar, All Music Guide

The band's name is derived from a character in The Italian Job movie. Guitarist Billy Morrison describes them as: "...not a band, but it is also way more than a jam session. Camp Freddy is an ‘Occasional Happening’, a freak of (Hollywood) nature."

Scott Weiland was a core member and vocalist for the band from March 2006 until April 2008, when his decision to leave Velvet Revolver for Stone Temple Pilots caused tension between Matt Sorum and Weiland, leading to his departure from the group being announced on the April 2, 2008 edition of Camp Freddy Radio.

Camp Freddy, with producer Mike Clink, have been recording an album which will mirror the live shows, with guests performing on each track. So far, two tracks have been released: Cheap Trick's "Surrender" and Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody". In 2009, Billy Morrison stated that "there will be a record. One day! When we all get around to finishing what we started."[2]

On Saturday evenings band members - usually Morrison and Navarro - hosted a radio show which took place between the hours of 18:00 and 20:00 PT on the Los Angeles based Indie 103.1 FM radio station. Podcasts can be found for each show in an on demand archive on Billymorrison.net or Dave Navarro's 6767.com
