Can pearls be genetically engineered?

 

Pearls can now be genetically engineered because scientists have isolated and characterized the protein nacrein, which is the primary component of pearls. When nacrein is combined with calcium ions, it forms an organic matrix similar to that found in an oyster's inner shell.
