Canterbury

City in Kent, SE England, the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, head of the Church of England. Population: 39,700. St. Augustine established a church and monastery here in 597. After the 1170 murder of Thomas à Becket, Canterbury became a place of medieval pilgrimage.
