Can two populations occupy the same niche?

According to G. F. Gause (1910-1988), an ecologist, two species that are in direct competition for the same resource cannot coexist if that resource is limited in some way. The work of Gause and others predicts that under such conditions one population will drive the other to extinction in that local area.
