It was the afternoon of April 11th, 1861 in Charleston, South
Carolina when Confederate forces first demanded the surrender of
the Union forces garrisoned on the island stronghold, Fort Sumter.
Their offer was grimly declined by the fort's commander.
Bombardment via cannonade of the fort began early the next
morning.
