Composed for the Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity, which fell on September 19, 1723, Bach's Cantata No. 148 "Bringt dem Herrn Ehre seines Namens" (Give the Lord the Glory due his Name) (BWV 148) sets a paraphrase of a poem by Picander based on a pair of lines from Psalm 96:8-9 that form the text for the opening chorus, and a chorale by Johann Heermann that forms the closing chorus. The cantata is scored for alto and tenor soloists, chorus, strings, and basso continuo with two oboe d'amore and oboe da caccia in the fourth movement, trumpet in the outer movement, and the whole orchestra in the final movement. "Bringt dem Herrn Ehre seines Namens" starts in bright D major with its second movement in the relative minor of B minor, its third and fourth movement in the major subdominant of G major, and its fifth and sixth movements are in the minor mediant of F sharp minor. The first movement essentially is a concerto for trumpet and strings fused with a choral fugue. The second movement is a flowing aria in the form of a trio sonata for tenor soloist, violin concertante, and continuo. The third is a recitative for alto accompanied by strings and continuo. The fourth is a knotty aria for alto soloist, two oboe d'amore, oboe da caccia, and continuo. The fifth is a brief secco recitative for tenor soloist and continuo. "Bringt dem Herrn Ehre seines Namens" concludes with a stark harmonization of Heermann's chorale for chorus and full orchestra colla parte. ~ All Music Guide
