A Spanish and Portuguese medieval monophonic song. Apart from six love-songs by martin Codax, the only surviving music is a collection of over 400 songs made c 1250-80 under the direction of Alfonso el Sabio and known as the Cantigas de Santa Maria. Most of them, with tunes probably of secular origin, are ballad-style accounts of miracles performed by the Blessed Virgin, but every tenth is a hymn in her praise. King Alfonso may have written some of the words and music himself. The texts and illustrations in the four surviving MSS provide valuable insight into methods of performance and other aspects of medieval life.

A cantiga (cantica, cantar) is a medieval monophonic song, characteristic of the Galician-Portuguese lyric. Over 400 extant cantigas come from the Cantigas de Santa Maria, narrative songs about miracles or hymns in praise of the Holy Virgin. There are near 1700 secular cantigas but music has only survived for a very few: six cantigas de amigo by Martín Codax and seven cantigas de amor by Denis of Portugal.


Cantiga is also the name of a poetic and musical form of the Renaissance, often associated with the villancico and the canción.
