The Cape Colony was officially created on March 7, 1652, when Jan van Riebeeck, on behalf of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), established a settlement at the Cape of Good Hope. This settlement marked the beginning of the Cape Colony, which later developed into a Dutch colony and, subsequently, came under British control in the late 18th century.
