Capital High School (CHS), commonly referred to as Capital, is a public high school in Olympia, Washington, USA. It is one of two comprehensive high schools in the Olympia School District. Capital is located on Olympia's Westside, and serves the entire northwest corner of Thurston County. High School students from the Griffin School District attend Capital.

Remodel
In September 2006 a $24.2m renovation project was completed which included a new student commons, a 1000-seat auditorium, an auxiliary gymnasium, fitness room; and modernization of the library, alternative education, administrative offices, and four pod areas. Currently, the east football field is under construction and will be ready for use in September 2008. Improvements include track resurfacing and reconstruction of the high jump area. The field has been stripped, irrigation systems and drainage installed as well as a new sand base.
Roof Collapse
On Christmas Day , 2008, a large portion of the Capital High School roof covering the library collapsed due to unusually large amounts of snow. Repairs caused winter break to be extended for a week, and students also had many days canceled due to snow on the unstable roof. Currently roof trusses are being tested to determine the stability of the rest of the roof.
Mission statement
The Capital High School staff, in partnership with students, their families and community, will provide high standards in teaching and learning in a safe, supportive environment so that all students will achieve and develop the capacity for life-long learning.
A Capital High School student will explore and appreciate art, music, cultures, careers, diversity, social sciences, natural sciences, mathematics, languages, and physical health/wellness. Students will be expected to meet rigorous standards in the academic and extracurricular paths they choose.
A Capital student will develop a personal commitment to: understanding and valuing self and others; maintaining a healthy lifestyle; setting goals and meeting high standards; protecting the environment; pride in self, school, and community; citizenship and community service; having a sense of humor; being a life-long learner; understanding the need for authority from a community perspective; being respectful and responsible in nature.
National Honor Society
The National Honor Society at Capital High School is governed by the Constitution of the National Honor Society. Activities include organizing the schoolwide canned food drive, and the annual Trick-or-Canning event, which benefits the local Thurston County Food Bank. They also have worked and established a homework club for the Evergreen Vista Apartment complex with help from Mr. Paul Grudis and the United Way.

Capital High School is a 3A-division member of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association. It is a member of the Western Cascade Conference, which includes: North Thurston, Timberline High School (Lacey, Washington), Clover Park, Shelton, Yelm, and Lakes high schools.

Capital High School has been one of the state's most successful athletic programs since the school's inception.
Capital Football is one of the top football programs in the state of Washington. The Cougars have won two State Championships (1996 & 1998), once state runner-up (2002), and played in the state semifinals eight times since 1984. Capital has produced players that went on to play at Washington, Washington State, Oregon State, Oregon, Stanford, Arizona State, and a number of other college football programs.
Capital has continued to have a particularly strong Cross Country tradition. Both the men's and women's teams have been contenders year after year for the state title. This year, both men's and women's Cross Country took first place in League.
The girl's swim team is another group who has maintained a strong athletic history. Every year since 2000 these girls have placed in the top five at the state competitions. In 2006, the team was undefeated and League Champions.
The baseball program has had a long history of success, with the high points being state championships in 1979 and 1998. Capital was runner-ups three times and has advanced to the state semifinals seven times. Capital has produced numerous players who have played college and professional baseball.
Women's fastpitch has made five state championship appearances, winning four state championships. The fastpitch program has advanced to nine state championship semifinals since 1994.
Men's golf has had strong success winning 6 state championships. Women's golf was a one time state runner-up. One notable alumni of Capital High School's golf program is professional golfer Andres Gonzalez.
The men's tennis squad is taught by Joe Monroe.
The CHS debate team is doing very well this year under the great guidance of Coach Jim Anderson. Many members of the debate team have received awards for their efforts at several debate tournaments this year.
The Academic Decathlon team has won nine state championships (1983, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996).
The Capital High School Drill Team, coached by Jan Kiefer, placed 3rd in the 2007 state competition in Yakima.
Academic All-American Program
A unique program of recognition at Capital is the Academic All-American Award. To qualify students must:
- Have a 3.4 GPA minimum during the semester being evaluated.
- Take four solid courses: Math, Science, English, World Language, and/or Social Studies.
- Participate in a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association activity, or hold a leadership role in any ASB sponsored activity, or be recommended by the Music Department, or complete 30 hours of community service (prearranged through the Principal)
- Good attendance: Fewer than 5 absences.
- Students who achieve Academic All-American status for 6 of the 8 semesters will receive special recognition at graduation. Applications must be completed each semester, signed by the coach or staff advisory of activity and turned in by the deadline on the application
International Baccalaureate Program
Capital High is currently the only school in the Olympia/Tumwater/Lacey metropolitan area which offers the International Baccalaureate Program. Because of this, it is not uncommon for students looking for a greater academic achievement to cross district lines to attend Capital. IB tests are taken in the spring in student's senior year after taking two years of an IB course, and students have an opportunity to receive an IB diploma. Tests and other projects are sent to Switzerland to be graded.
Running Start Program
Like many schools in Washington, Capital participates in the running start program, which allows students to attend college classes at local institutions. Students not only earn college-level credit, but can also satisfy graduation requirements with core-level classes taken at the baccalaureate level.
History
Capital High School was founded in 1975, to split the district into a two high school system. Budd Inlet and Capitol Lake create a natural geographic split of the Olympia School District. Capital serves areas west of the bay while Olympia High School serves areas east of the bay.
The Class of 1984 gave CHS its fight song. The music comes from the University of Houston fight song.
