Car Magazine

Wikipedia: Car Magazine
Car magazine (UK edition), September 2002 issue

Car Magazine is a British automotive enthusiast magazine, published monthly by Bauer Automotive.

As of 2008, there are also international editions published in Brazil, China, Greece, India, Mexico, Middle East, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Thailand and Turkey.[1] There is also a Japanese counterpart Car Magazine (カーマガジン kaa magajin?), published by Neko Publishing.[2]

The magazine was launched in 1962 as Small Car and Mini Owner, changing its name to Car in 1966.[3] In the 1960s Car pioneered the 'Car of The Year' (COTY) competition that was subsequently decided by motoring journalists on a Europe wide basis. In the 1970s and 80s it was far ahead of other motoring magazines for the quality and depth of its writing, artwork and photography. L. J. K. Setright in many insightful series of articles, linked the development and history of the motor car to its social, technological and historical contexts. It was also renowned for the quality of its 'scoop' photos and drawings, and took delight in the irritation it caused to car manufacturers by revealing significant new models ahead of time. The straight talking 'The Good, The Bad and the Ugly' section appraised all new cars, (with basic data) often using biting sarcastic criticism.

From 1991 to 2007, it was published by Emap. Significant contributors during the magazine's heyday included Rowan Atkinson, George Bishop, Russell Bulgin, Philip Llewellin, James May, Alexei Sayle and L. J. K. Setright.

Contents

Current UK Format

As of 2009, CAR Magazine features a regular group test under the 'Giant Test' name, which was originally developed by CAR in the 1970s. It also features 'newcomer' first drives of new cars, interviews with significant figures in the motor industry and other features. In March 2009 the magazine's listings section (which gives details of new cars on sale in the UK) was rebranded as 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' after an absence of nearly three years.

CAR's sales have suffered from a steady decline since their peak in the mid 1990s. It currently sells 72,000 copies a month [4], putting it fourth in the UK motoring monthly segment behind Top Gear, What Car? and Evo magazines.
