Dictionary of Dance:

Caracalla Dance Theatre

Lebanese company based in Beirut founded in 1970 by Abdel-Halim Caracalla. The troupe made its international debut at the 1972 Festival of Osaka in Japan. It travels extensively in Europe and North America. Its first full-length production was Mystery of the Bizarre in 1974. In recent years Caracalla has favoured Shakespearean themes, and has choreographed full-length productions of an Oriental Midsummer Night's Dream and Taming of the Shrew. His style is based on an amalgamation of Western contemporary dance and traditional Middle Eastern dance.
