Carberry Hill, encounter at, 1567. Mary, queen of Scots' marriage to Bothwell in May 1567 provoked widespread protest. On 15 June at Carberry Hill, east of the city, they were confronted by a superior force. While negotiations continued, Mary's troops began to desert. Bothwell fled north and finished up in lifelong captivity in Denmark. Mary abdicated in favour of her infant son James.
