What is Carbetapentane; Guaifenesin; Phenylephrine oral suspension?

CARBETAPENTANE; GUAIFENESIN; PHENYLEPHRINE (Levall™ Oral Suspension) is used to relieve cough and congestion due to colds, sinus congestion, and bronchitis. Generic carbetapentane; guaifenesin; phenylephrine oral suspension is not available.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
• artery or vessel disease
• asthma
• bronchitis
• diabetes
• difficulty passing urine
• chronic cough
• emphysema
• enlarged prostate
• glaucoma
• head injury
• heart disease including angina and heart failure
• high blood pressure
• history of heart attack
• history of stroke or mini-strokes (TIAs)
• irregular heart beat
• liver disease
• seizures or history of seizures
• thyroid disease
• an unusual reaction to carbetapentane, guaifenesin, phenylephrine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
• pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• breast-feeding

How should this medicine be used?

Take carbetapentane; guaifenesin; phenylephrine oral suspension by mouth. Follow the directions on the bottle. Shake well before use. Use a specially marked spoon or container to measure your medicine. Ask your pharmacist if you do not have one; household spoons are not always accurate. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

What drug(s) may interact with Carbetapentane; Guaifenesin; Phenylephrine?

• atropine
• bromocriptine
• caffeine
• cocaine
• digoxin
• ergotamine
• furazolidone
• herbal products such as Ginger Root, Green Tea, Guarana, and St. John's Wort
• linezolid
• medicines for chest pain, heart disease, high blood pressure, or heart rhythm problems
• medicine for diabetes
• medicines known as MAO inhibitors, such as phenelzine (Nardil®), tranylcypromine (Parnate®), isocarboxazid (Marplan®), and selegiline (Carbex®, Eldepryl®)
• medicines for mental depression
• medicines for mental problems and psychotic disturbances
• medicines for movement abnormalities as in Parkinson's disease, or for gastrointestinal problems
• medicines for weight loss
• oxytocin
• procarbazine
• stimulants
• theophylline
• thyroid hormones
• vasopressin

Because this product can cause drowsiness, other medicines that also cause drowsiness may increase this effect. Some medicines that cause drowsiness are:
• alcohol and alcohol-containing medicines
• barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions)
• medicines for anxiety or sleeping problems, such as diazepam or temazepam
• medicines for hay fever and other allergies
• muscle relaxers
• prescription pain medicines

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What should I watch for while taking Carbetapentane; Guaifenesin; Phenylephrine?

If you have a fever, skin rash, or persistent headache as well as a cough, see your prescriber or health care professional. Do not treat yourself for a cough for more than one week without consulting your prescriber or health care professional.

You may get drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know this medicine affects you. Alcohol can increase the risk of getting drowsy, dizzy, or confused. Avoid alcoholic drinks.

What side effects may I notice from receiving Carbetapentane; Guaifenesin; Phenylephrine?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
• agitation, nervousness, excitability
• confusion
• difficulty or pain passing urine
• fever
• headache, especially if severe or gets worse
• high or low blood pressure
• irregular heart rate
• muscle weakness
• rash or other allergic reaction
• seizures
• severe nausea, vomiting
• slow or troubled breathing
• tremors

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
• diarrhea
• dizziness, drowsiness
• nausea, vomiting
• stomach ache
• tremor
• trouble sleeping
• weakness

Where can I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.

Store at room temperature between 15—30 degrees C (59—86 degrees F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
