Brouard, Carl (1902-65), poet and ‘enfant terrible’ of Haitian indigénisme, helped found La Revue indigène (1927-8) and later became director of Les Griots (1938-40). Restless, bohemian, and mystical, he left his wealthy background to live in the slums of Port-au-Prince. His poetry was marked by voodoo mysticism and he became a strident apologist for noirisme. Catholic mysticism dominates his final poetic ramblings.
