(b Hanover, 10 June 1928; d Berlin, 13 March 1989). German musicologist. He studied at Göttingen and Freiburg, then worked as production adviser to the Deutsches Theater, Göttingen (1950-58), for the Stuttgarter Zeitung (1960-62) and then at Kiel University. In 1967 he became professor of music history at the Technical University, Berlin. His writings cover a broad spectrum, including theory, analysis and aesthetics. He wrote on music from the 15th century to the present, notably on Josquin and Wagner; for the range and depth of his works he was one of the most influential musical thinkers of our time.
