Carl Schurz High School is a public school located at 3601 North Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. This school is named after lieutenant Carl Schurz. Lieutenant Schurz was a major advocate of democracy in Germany, and became involved with a revolutionary army which was suppressed by the Prussians. After the war, Lieutenant Schurz moved to Wisconsin, where he opened a school for immigrant German children. He then campaigned for President Lincoln, served as a Union Army General in the American Civil War, and wrote for the Detroit Post.
The school building, which represents a combination of the Chicago and Prairie schools of architecture, was constructed in 1910 by Dwight H. Perkins and designated a Chicago Landmark on December 7, 1979.[2] It is considered one of "150 great places in Illinois" by the American Institute of Architects.[3] The AIA has described the school as Perkins's masterpiece, "an important example of early-twentieth century architecture, utilizing elements of both the Chicago and Prairie schools."[3]
Notable alumni of the school include biochemist Vincent du Vigneaud,[4] businessman A. N. Pritzker, CBS chairman William S. Paley, boxer David Diaz,[5] and Olympic gold medalist swimmer Sybil Bauer.[6]
