Biography

Singer/songwriter Carla Werner was born and raised in New Zealand, the daughter of a dairy farmer. Her grandfather played in a band called the Country Boys, and she was exposed to a broad range of pop music as a child. She began singing country music in competitions before her teens. Early in her teens, she moved to Australia with her mother and siblings, where the competitiveness of the music scene caused her to give up trying to become a professional musician at 16. At 19, however, she moved to Sydney to seek that very career. She met producer John Holbrook in 1999 and in 2000 signed her first record deal with Engine Room Music. This led to an introduction to producer Carmen Rizzo, who worked with remix artist Paul Oakenfold, and she began to add vocals to Oakenfold productions while continuing to work on her first album. By 2001, she was actively seeking a deal with international record companies, and she succeeded in securing a contract with Columbia Records. Her debut album, Departure, was released by Columbia on July 29, 2003. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Carla Werner is a singer and songwriter from New Zealand who began her music career at age 11.

Her first major record deal was in 2002 with Columbia Records, Sony Music (New York, USA) and was followed by the release of her debut album Departure in 2003. To date, Carla has worked with producers, writers, musicians, and DJ's all over the world including producers Ken Nelson (Coldplay) and Carmen Rizzo (Paul Oakenfold); collaborations with songwriter's Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill") and UK DJ, Paul Oakenfold, providing vocals and lyrics for the hit song "Southern Sun" which reached number one in the UK Dance Charts[citation needed], prompting a performance on the (now debunked) "Top of the Pops" in 2004. With compositions appearing in film and television, including the Michael Stipe (R.E.M.) produced film Saved; an extensive touring backlog with artists such as the Pretenders, Damien Rice, The Jayhawks, Howie Day, as well as special guest performer at the Jeff Buckley Tributes with artists Ed Harcourt and Jamie Cullum in London and Ireland in 2004, Carla has become an internationally acclaimed vocalist, writer and performer.[citation needed] Developing her own label OfOne Music in 2005, and releasing the first independent project from that label in 2006 with Pure Things in Wild Places.

Carla is now based in Los Angeles and is currently writing for her third studio album to be released in 2009. As well as pioneering her own unique sound, she regularly frequents the collaboration world, more recently teaming up with UK DJ's Loverush UK! for their forthcoming release "Give Me Your Love".
