Chiostri, Carlo (1863–1939), one of the foremost Italian illustrators of fairy‐tale books in the 19th and early 20th centuries. An autodidact, he developed his own unusual style of photographic realism and psychological introspection and provided pictures for over 200 books during his lifetime. He illustrated works by most of the important Italian fairy‐tale writers of his time such as Carlo Collodi, Luigi Capuana, Emma Perodi, and Adriano Salani and also provided drawings for the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm.
