Lynley was born Carole Ann Jones in New York City, the daughter of Frances (née Felch), a waitress, and Cyril Jones.[1] Her father was Irish and her mother, a native of New England, was of English, Scottish, Welsh, German, and Native American ancestry.[2] Lynley began her career as a child model under the name "Carolyn Lee", and when she started acting (after appearing on the April 22, 1957 cover of Life magazine at 15),[3][4] she discovered that another actress had already registered the name, so she modified it to the homophone "Carol Lynley".[citation needed]
Early on, Lynley distinguished herself in both the Broadway stage and Hollywood screen versions of the controversial drama Blue Denim (1959), in which the teenage characters played by Lynley and co-star Brandon De Wilde had to deal with an unwanted pregnancy.[5]
In 1959, Lynley was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for "Most Promising Newcomer – Female".[6]
Lynley appeared in the fourth season Man from U.N.C.L.E. two-part episode, "The Prince of Darkness Affair".[7]
In films, Lynley is known for her roles in Return to Peyton Place, Under the Yum Yum Tree, Bunny Lake is Missing, The Cardinal, Harlow and the original version of The Poseidon Adventure. Although in her role as a singer in the Poseidon film she performed the Oscar-winning song "The Morning After," Lynley's singing voice was actually that of studio singer Renee Armand.[8]
She appeared in the pilot television movie for Fantasy Island. Her many other series appearances included The Big Valley, Mannix, Night Gallery, Kojak, Hawaii Five-0 and Charlie's Angels.
In 1961, Lynley was a guest on the NBC interview program Here's Hollywood.[9]
Lynley posed nude for the March 1965 edition of Playboy magazine.[10][11]
She works rarely now. In 2006, Lynley did appear in a 30-minute film, "Vic," directed and co-written by Sage Stallone, son of Sylvester Stallone.
