Biography

A busy teenaged model, Carol Lynley rose to fame by virtue of a series of popular hair-conditioner commercials. Her first important acting assignment was as a high-school-age murderess on a 1958 episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, directed by Robert Altman. The blonde ingenue played a more sedate role in her first film, Disney's The Light in the Forest. Carol Lynley continued essaying a variety of sympathetic and menacing roles into the 1990s, earning extensive press coverage for her portrayal of film-legend Jean Harlow in a 1965 "electronivision" production, released at the same time as another Harlow biography starring Carroll Baker. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Biography

Born Carole Ann Jones in New York City, Lynley began her career as a child model under the name "Carolyn Lee", and when she started acting (after appearing on the cover of Life magazine at 15[1][2]), she discovered that another actress had already registered the name, so she modified it to the homophone "Carol Lynley".[citation needed]

Early on, Lynley distinguished herself in both the Broadway stage and Hollywood screen versions of the controversial drama Blue Denim (1959), in which the teenage characters played by Lynley and co-star Brandon De Wilde had to deal with an unwanted pregnancy.[3]

In 1959, Lynley was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for "Most Promising Newcomer – Female".[4]

Lynley appeared in the fourth season Man from U.N.C.L.E. two-part episode, "The Prince of Darkness Affair".[5]

Lynley is known for her roles in Hound-Dog Man, Return to Peyton Place, Under the Yum Yum Tree, Bunny Lake is Missing, Harlow, the original version of The Poseidon Adventure, and the pilot television movie for Fantasy Island. She appeared on the NBC interview program Here's Hollywood (1961).[6]

Although especially well-known for her performance as a singer in The Poseidon Adventure, her singing voice was, in fact, that of studio singer Renée Armand.[7]

Lynley posed nude for the March 1965 edition of Playboy magazine.[8][9]
