Carolina

Place Names: Carolina
  • Location: Colombia, Puerto Rico, Suriname, USA

1. Puerto Rico: formerly Trujillo Bajo and then renamed San Fernando de la Carolina. The present name is a shortened version of the previous name which honoured the Spanish King Charles II.
2. USA: two states, North and South Carolina. Originally a single small territory named Caroline in 1564 after the Latin form of the name, Carolus, by the French as a tribute to Charles IX (1550–74), King of France (1560–74). A small English colony was established temporarily in 1585, but it was not until 1629 that the name Carolina was accepted by the English after Charles I had granted this territory to Robert Heath. In 1663 Charles II granted the territory to Edward Hyde (1609–74), 1st Earl of Clarendon and lord chancellor to the king (1658–67), and seven other proprietors to establish a colony and it became known officially as Carolina after him. In 1712 Carolina was partitioned when North Carolina was established as a separate province, becoming a royal colony in 1729 as did South Carolina. However, the border between the two was not agreed until 1735. South Carolina became the 8th state to join the Union in 1788, but in 1860 it was the first state to secede; it rejoined in 1868. North Carolina joined the Union as the 12th state in 1789. It seceded in 1861 and was not readmitted until 1868.
