American architectural partnership formed in 1885 by John Merven Carr?re (b Rio de Janiero, 9 Nov 1858; d New York, 1 March 1911) and Thomas Hastings (b New York, 11 March 1860; d New York, 22 Oct 1929). Carr?re studied in Lausanne and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris (1877-82), in the atelier of Victor-Marie-Charles Ruprich-Robert. On his return to New York, Carr?re worked in the office of McKim, Mead & White (1883-5) before setting up practice with his fellow employee Hastings. Hastings had studied more briefly at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1884 in the atelier of Louis-Jules Andr?.
