Carrier frequency

(communications) The frequency generated by an unmodulated radio, radar, carrier communication, or other transmitter, or the average frequency of the emitted wave when modulated by a symmetrical signal. Also known as center frequency; resting frequency.

The transmission of a fixed frequency that has been altered (modulated) to "carry" data. The frequency is measured in Hertz (cycles per second). See carrier, Hz, FDM and TDM.

Carrier frequency is a term used to designate:

• The nominal frequency of a carrier wave
• The center frequency of a frequency modulation signal
• The frequency of the unmodulated electrical wave at the output of an amplitude modulated (AM), frequency modulated (FM) or phase modulated (PM) transmitter
• The output of a transmitter when the modulation is zero.
• The rate of occurrence within a population of a chromosome that causes a genetic disorder
