Plot
The producers of the popular British "Carry On" series aren't going to fix something if it is not broken. This workable, slapstick comedy returns to a hospital setting and benefits from the same gags that made Carry On, Nurse a top draw in Britain. Instead of Dr. Kildare, this emergency unit has Dr. Kilmore (Jim Dale), the usual curmudgeon supervisor (Kenneth Williams) and a bedpan full of quirky quacks and petulant patients. The hospital staff is plagued by bathroom humor, romance, medical mistakes and beautiful nurses who distract the doctors and patients alike. Sight gags and comedy ensues, and this film is just what the doctor ordered for those in need of some laughs. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide
Carry On Doctor (1967) is the fifteenth film in the "Carry On" series. It has been described as the best of the four Carry On films set in a hospital.[citation needed]
After an injured charlatan is admitted to the hospital, a well-liked doctor is sacked from his job for apparently leering over a sunbathing nurse, when really the whole incident of his sacking was conspired by the universally detested Dr. Tinkle and his ghastly matron. The rebellious patients decide to exact revenge upon the doctor and matron for what they have done.
Production notes
The exteriors of the hospital are actually Maidenhead Town Hall, Berkshire. In Québec the film is entitled L'hôpital en folie meaning The messed-up hospital.
In-jokes
The portrait hanging over one of the doors is that of Sir Lancelot interpreted by James Robertson Justice in the rival series "Doctor", produced by Peter Rogers' wife, Betty E. Box. The film also contains a sly reference to the 1959 Carry On Nurse. During the thermometer scene a nurse approaches Francis Bigger with a daffodil and he says, "Oh no you don't! I saw that film!"
