If new home construction has you yelling "timber!," Carter has the answer. Carter Lumber owns more than 200 lumber and home-improvement stores in 10 states from Michigan to South Carolina. The company caters to both contractors and do-it-yourselfers, supplying them with lumber, plywood, roofing, windows, doors, plumbing and electrical products, heating equipment, tools, siding, and other products. The home-improvement retailer also owns the Carter-Jones Timber Co., which owns and manages about 74,000 acres of timberland in Arkansas. Warren E. Carter, who founded the company in 1932, died in 2000 at the age of 101. However, Carter Lumber continues to be a family-owned business.
