[French, small box, from Old French, diminutive of Norman French casse, case. See case2.]
Recording tape threaded on two reels and self-contained inside a compact closed plastic case. There are two kinds, audio and video. The cassette functions as a recording or playback unit when placed in a cassette recorder or player. Advertising agencies, creative personnel (such as artists or photographers), or production companies will often store copies of commercials in which they have participated, or which they have created and produced, on videocassettes. These can be shown to prospective clients with relative ease.

2. a magazine for film or magnetic tape.
A light, tight container in which x-ray films are placed for exposure to x-rays; usually backed with lead to eliminate the effect of backscattered radiation.
