Italian family of artists, also active in Spain. They specialized in elaborately conceived decorative schemes and received commissions from leading members of the Genoese nobility and Spanish monarchy. (1) Giovanni Battista Castello [il Bergamasco] was a painter, stuccoist and architect who worked in Genoa from c. 1540-41 to c. 1566-7 and thereafter in Spain until his death in 1569. His youngest son (2) Fabrizio Castello was Pintor del Rey to Philip II, King of Spain, from 1584 and was chiefly engaged in the decoration of the Escorial. Fabrizio Castello's son (3) F?lix Castello was a painter who executed commissions for Philip IV in the 1630s and 1640s. NICOL?S GRANELLO was related to the family through the marriage of his mother, Margherita, to Giovanni Battista Castello.
